Mahesh Manjrekar
Biography
Mahesh Manjrekar served as the iconic face of Bigg Boss Marathi for four consecutive seasons, beginning with the show's debut on April 15, 2018. As the host of the Marathi-language adaptation of the global Big Brother format, Manjrekar was instrumental in establishing the show's identity over a five-year tenure ending in January 2023. His hosting style was characterized by a "no-nonsense" and direct approach, often referred to as the Weekend Chavadi, where he would meticulously analyze the week's events and school contestants on their behavior. Under his guidance, the show grew significantly in popularity, transitioning from its initial house in Lonavala for Season 1 to a permanent set in Mumbai’s Film City for subsequent installments.
Throughout his four seasons, Manjrekar was known for his candid critiques and high-energy interactions. One of the most significant periods of his tenure occurred during Season 3 (2021), when he returned to the host’s chair shortly after undergoing surgery for urinary bladder cancer. Despite his health challenges, he maintained his trademark intensity, famously lashing out at contestants like Sneha Wagh for using her personal life to gain sympathy and criticizing Mira Jagannath for attempting to create her own rules within the house. His ability to balance professional discipline with a personal touch made him a respected figure among both the audience and the housemates.
His tenure was not without controversy, as Manjrekar often found himself at the center of social media debates regarding his perceived biases. In Season 4, some viewers accused him of favoring contestant Akshay Kelkar, who eventually won the season. Additionally, he frequently had to navigate volatile house situations, such as in Season 2, when contestant Abhijeet Bichukale was arrested directly from the house in connection with a legal case, and Parag Kanhere was evicted for physical violence. Manjrekar often used these moments to clarify that he was not the "decision-maker" regarding evictions or wild cards, emphasizing that the results were determined by public voting and the show's producers.
Manjrekar's journey with the franchise concluded before the start of Season 5 in 2024, when he was replaced by Riteish Deshmukh. His departure marked the end of an era for the regional show, leaving behind a legacy of "devil-may-care" hosting that prioritized honesty and strict adherence to the game's spirit. His contribution remains a cornerstone of the show's history, having successfully translated the high-stakes drama of the Hindi version into a cultural phenomenon for the Marathi-speaking audience.
