Kamal Haasan

Biography

Kamal Haasan’s tenure as the host of Bigg Boss Tamil began with the show’s inception on June 25, 2017, marking a significant milestone in Tamil television history. Over the course of seven seasons, Haasan became the face of the franchise, steering the reality show through 947 episodes until his departure following the conclusion of Season 7 in January 2024. His involvement lasted seven years, during which he became known for his "part mentor, part provocateur" hosting style, often using the platform to discuss social issues and ethical behavior. While he was initially set to host the digital spin-off Bigg Boss Ultimate, he eventually had to opt out of that project due to scheduling conflicts with his film Vikram.

Haasan’s hosting was characterized by his authoritative yet philosophical approach, particularly through his use of the "Kurumpadam" (short film). This tool allowed him to play back specific clips to housemates to expose lies or clarify disputes, notably using it in Season 3 to reprimand Losliya and in Season 6 to prove Dhanalakshmi's innocence against accusations from Azeem. His tenure reached a viewership peak during the launch of Season 4, which garnered a record 11.61 TRP, partly due to the audience's increased engagement during the COVID-19 lockdown. Beyond the gameplay, Haasan’s personal style became a highlight, with his signature "salt and pepper" look and custom accessories in later seasons becoming major talking points for fans.

Despite his popularity, Haasan’s journey was not without significant controversies and tough decisions. One of the most polarising moments occurred in Season 7 when he issued a "Red Card" (ejection) to contestant Pradeep Antony following serious allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women in the house. This decision sparked intense debate among viewers, with some praising the decisive action and others criticizing the lack of a formal investigation. Other notable incidents included his stern "walkout" in Season 1 to protest contestant indiscipline and a legal complaint filed against him in Season 2 after housemates allegedly compared a former Chief Minister to a dictator.

In August 2024, Kamal Haasan officially announced his exit from the show, citing prior cinematic commitments as the primary reason for his "heavy-hearted" break. He expressed deep gratitude to the viewers for the seven-year journey, describing the role as an "enriching association" that allowed him to share his learnings with a wide audience. Following his departure, the hosting mantle for Season 8 was taken over by actor Vijay Sethupathi, marking the end of an era for the "Ulaganayagan" on the Bigg Boss stage.
